Netflix’s Tick, Tick… Boom! is a wonderfully inspiring film adaptation of the autobiographical musical from the mind of Jonathan Larson, composer of hit Broadway musical, Rent. Starring Andrew Garfield and Alexandra Shipp, directed by Lin Manuel Miranda, Tick, Tick… Boom! brings the fantastic musical to the screen. Andrew Garfield expertly plays the late composer in an emotional look at the life of an up-and-coming artist in New York looking to find success while he’s young.
Garfield plays Jonathan Larson, a 29 year old composer who’s spent his 20s writing a commentative sci-fi musical. With an internal countdown ticking towards his 30th birthday, he races against the clock for his musical to succeed while he’s still in his youth. The musical also touches on the HIV epidemic, the event that inspired Larson to write Rent.
Fans of Andrew Garfield may be surprised to see him in a musical, a first for Garfield, who had spent a year learning to sing for the role. The musical also features a cameo appearance by several Broadway legends, such as Bernadette Peters, André de Shields, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and the original cast of Rent.
Netflix delivers a powerful and beautiful adaptation of Larson’s heartfelt musical with “first-rate lyric and tune.”
