October, the simple transition from the blazing Texas summer to the crisp breeze of fall welcomes the autumnal scent of Bath and Body Works candles, pumpkin spice everything, and finally a time to pull out the boots. However, a color that refuses to align with the earthy tones of fall stands out against the norm.
Pink, the simple color of a monthly tradition celebrated by thousands of Americans: Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Friday, October 7th, the student body conducted a Pink Out pep rally in honor of anyone who has been touched by cancer.
“October means a lot to me…October fifth is my birthday,” the ESL instructor aide, Connie Martinez said. “Now, I have one more added to my celebration, it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
At the pep rally, the mascots put together a skit for all of the staff members in relation to cancer. They defeated cancer by running around and then standing on the podium holding up a sign that possessed a strong and united tone.
“The skit was fun and put a positive spin on the fight that all cancer patients face during their journey. It is a battle, and you do have to fight to overcome,” the FCCLA adviser, Jennifer Pool said .
While our school comes together due to something as terrible as this monstrous disease, all spirits were lifted high as the population of the school celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness month.
“There were a lot of angles here,” Martinez said regarding the extent of her treatment last year.
Additionally, this month truly touches the individuals whose lives were dramtitically changed.
“My sister, best friend, and my best friend’s son all died of cancer,” theatre teacher, Angela Powell said.
Because of this month’s increased dedication to rasie awareness, the staff and student body choose to rise and contribute to the cause.
“After losing my Mom, I have made it a goal to make sure I encourage those around me to get regular mammograms…early detection saves lives, ” Pool said.
The internal awareness within one’s body and the external awareness within the public, for many, is attributed to the aid of superior fate manipulators.
“I thank God that he gave me the opportunity to continue to stay here,” Martinez said.
***Although this is about the Pink Out pep rally and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the GrassBurr staff would like to formally honor the memory of Randy Gutierrez and remind Roo Nation how precious life truly is.
