Defensive Coordinator and teacher, Coach Dick Smith, has made the decision to retire and hang up his whistle so to speak at the end of this semester. He has put 31 years into educating and coaching students.
Since the age of 17, Coach Smith knew that he wanted to be a coach for a living.
“I love working with young people,” said Smith. “My dad inspired me.”
Smith attended the University of Texas after high school, and then completed his degree at Angelo State University. Since that time he has coached in many districts ranging from small to large. He has coached in Rotan, Wimberly, Iowa Park, Glen Rose, and Weatherford.
Coaches that had an impact on Smith are his dad, Coach Weldon Nelms (WHS’s head football coach), and his own high school football coach.
“Be yourself and follow your heart” is the advice that Coach Smith would give to someone just starting in this profession.
Coach Smith said he would like to be remembered by the smile on his face and doing his best for the kids in the school.
We will miss you, Coach. Thank you for all you have done for, not just the Weatherford Kangaroos, but for students and players all over Texas.
