‘Fuller House,’ the latest to be struck by the remake rampage, made its debut February 26th on Netflix. The thirteen episode spinoff of the ‘80s and ‘90s sitcom, ‘Full House,’ hit the hearts of all audiences as many of the original fans of the series are now parents reliving this childhood nostalgia with their own kids.
Even though the series may seem a little out of place in the midst of shows like ‘Modern Family’ and ‘The Middle,’ it ultimately delivers the good laugh lines, catchphrases, and family values synonymous with the Tanner family. The premiere reintroduces cast members while filling in the expository and plot gaps that have widened through the years.
The sequel opens with the famous “Whatever happened to predictability,” setting the stage for a show modeled strikingly similar to the original. The entire premise of ‘Fuller House’ is a gender-flipped reworking; instead of the men coming together, the women grow closer with the death of DJ’s husband. She is joined by her younger sister, Stephanie, and life-long friend, Kimmy.
One of the most notably awkward moments of the ‘Fuller House’ premiere, was the fifteen second pause as the cast members stare into the camera acknowledging that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played Michelle in the original, did not sign on for the new series. The show possesses many interesting aspects including various dance numbers that seem a little random and references to The Flinstones and New Kids on the Block, which younger generations can hardly recall.
Overall, ‘Fuller House’ is a nostalgic reminder of the ’80s and ’90s, very similar to it’s preceder in plot and quirkiness even with the absence of one of the fundamental characters. You can find the series, all thirteen episodes, on Netflix!
