Ever since the big announcement of this year’s winter musical, gossip has been heard in the halls about the popular play, which will be performed Dec.13-14 in the Durant Auditorium.
It’s not Sweeny Todd, which some students thought it would be.
It’s “Shrek.”
“Shrek” was a blockbuster movie made in 2001 and became a musical in 2008. It is about a big green ogre and how a donkey passes through and sleeps in his swamp. They end up fighting about it, which results in a great friendship. Since theater teachers Casey Watson and Mary Dupree unveiled Shrek as this year’s pick, there has been a chorus of opinions about the choice.
“I hate how they’re making us do this musical even though we’ve done it a million times,” said a sophomore who did not want to be named]
“I just think “Shrek” won’t show off our acting talent,” said a senior who also does not wish to be named.
Not everyone agrees with that, including a student actor who landed one of the pivotal roles.
.“I love the new Shrek musical,” said sophomore Mark Williams. “And I love my part as Lord Farquaad.”
Other students, like sophomore Haley Reiling, said he isn’t “super excited” about the choice but thinks it will be a good play in the end.
“I am a little disappointed about it being Shrek instead of something else since they did it during the summer,” Haley said. “I think the actors will act to their full potential, and I will indeed be there.”
Then comes the positive side of things. Students all know and love Russell Fletcher, the Law Enforcement teacher. He loves supporting his kids, so expect to see him there.
“I am excited for Shrek,” Fletcher said. “And I prefer it to Sweeney Todd,” Fletcher claims.
Some people love it, some hate it, but what can we say—it’s “Shrek.”
