When Natalie Frizzell looks at all the clubs WHS has to offer, she gets excited about the wide range of diversity the groups represent.
Because of that, Frizzell, the student council president, wants to “build a better connection with the other clubs.”
“Right now,” she said, “It feels cliche.”
That’s why StuCo, which is in charge of many WHS events such as the school-spirited “‘dress up” days, face painting for football games, food booths, and volunteer work, has worked hard to provide this year’s theme, “Roo Expedition: Uniting Roo Nation.”
The whole idea behind the theme is to unify Roo Nation and help all the different groups feel a sense of connection.
Bringing a wide variety of voices helps introduce the plans for the year because it isn’t as much as one group of people, as it is a whole school. The theme really is one of the most important parts of the student council, because it helps convey what the plan is for the year.
It is sometimes difficult trying to come up with one for the whole school, and the student council theme was easier than the wide variety of the theme.
Homecoming is a responsibility of Cheer more than the school because they come up with the ideas and themes for Homecoming.
They also design all of the decorations and dances. People agree with the theme of student council because it is more of a whole organization and not just the individuals in student council. So it is easier for people to agree and like the themes.
StuCo Advisor Whitney Hubeek has a plan for the student council this year. She plans for the student council to earn awards when they attend the State Conference at the end of the year.
Planning to host monthly committee events, such as Red Ribbon Week, dress-up days, Earth Day, and Make a Wish Week.
Being the student council advisor is a big role because you are in charge of any event and why you choose that event.
“I was asked to be the advisor when I started last year,” Hubeek said. “I didn’t really know what I was getting into, but so far, I’ve enjoyed it and am learning as we go.”
Students put together the theme and have it run by the advisor. Hubeek’s job is to make sure the theme will work.
“The decision for the theme is because we wanted to demonstrate bringing the entire Roo Nation together as one,” Hubeek said.
The conference is where most of the inspiration for the theme comes from; they knew they wanted to bring everyone together as a “nation.”
First, the student council members were thinking about doing an ocean/ecosystem type of theme, but since the school mascot is a kangaroo, the student council members decided to go with a wilderness type of theme, for example, going on an expedition.
