In November 2024, Weatherford ISD made plans to officialize a swim team at the high school. Now, for the fall season of the 2025-26 school year, these plans have turned into action with coaches Tiffany Williams and Michael Swenson at the forefront of its creation.
The first swim meet is September 30th at the NISD Aquatic Center.
For its 72 years of service, Weatherford ISD has never officially had its own swim team. Leading the start of this monumental moment in the school’s history is Coach Michael Swenson, and he’s committed to overseeing the growth of the program. “We’re thrilled to see this program take off and encourage any students who are interested in swimming to get involved,” Swenson said.
WISD’s plan to create the swimming program came from an initiative to expand course offerings in 2024. Through creating a swim team, Weatherford aims to expand opportunities for students who want to participate in sports and demonstrate the capabilities of its diverse student population.
Every year, the summer swimming team outside of the district consistently has a membership of over 100 people, so it was apparent there was support for a larger effort. The coach who will teach and help the team during practice is Tiffany Williams. Coach Williams is currently the P.E. teacher at Bill Wright Elementary. She has ten years of experience in teaching swim lessons for Weatherford and four years at the high school level.
Coach Williams was also involved in the team’s creation, and she elaborates on the effort required to bring this proposal to fruition: “After years of discussion and planning, the School Board, Superintendent, and Athletic Department made the decision to move forward and officially launch a high school swim team, expanding athletic opportunities for students in the district.”
Currently enrolled on the team are members Kade Burlison, Kody Burlison, Cullen Costello, Nolan Crickman, Brady D’Spain, Kiela Daniel, Eljon Galindo, Talon Jurek, and Emma Kechnie. The student manager is Olivia Kechnie. The team will compete at UIL swim meets alongside other 3A through 6A districts such as Crowley, Euless Trinity, and Boswell.
The swim team will meet at Cherry Park Pool during the warmer months, and when the weather gets cooler, the team will practice at various indoor facilities within the DFW Metroplex.
