Picking up their state championship rings was a little like wining the 6A-D2 State Cheer competition all over again.
“It definitely sealed the deal,” said Cheer captain Lauren Schweiss. “We already knew we won state. We had the medals, but it was like a little ceremony specifically for us because we haven’t won a state championship in, like, a long time.”
In fact, a Weatherford sports team hasn’t captured a state championship since the softball team in 2000.
Captains Schweiss, Mallory Marshall and Emma Brown helped piece together the winning routine. Cheer has finished in the top five for he past six years. WHS won the competition by over two points. (In the world of cheer, that’s impressive.)
“Getting the rings felt really amazing especially being a captain and one of the people that made the routine,” Schweiss said. “It actually felt really good. I’m glad my teammates trusted me and my other captains.”
